The Artist

Directed by Michel Hazanavicius. With Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell. This silent film certainly impresses and shows why it has earned the Best Picture nomination.

I was encapsulated throughout this film, it focuses on a silent film actor George Valentine, who’s extremely popular for his act and very wealthy. We are taken on a journey leading to the downfall of this stars career.

I find it amazing that we are able to follow this feature, modern day film throughout without sound. It certainly brings note to how essential sound is in feature films but also how good acting and narrative really does make a film. The acting was incredible, the strong emotions and powerful suggestions empower the audience to determine the storyline.

I loved how the plot of the film linked with the actual creation of the film. The fall of the silent film actor and the rise of the speaking actress demonstrate how our current day market rely heavily on sound. However, The Artist has done incredible in box office sales and award nominations, is it the start of a new era of these type of films? Are we going to relive the 1930′s? Or would people find that too hard to get their head around? Lack of sound and dialogue, many of these common day actors would not last if we were to go back to past acting and films.

The sound gives occasional surprises and treats which really adds to the original style of this format of the film. The ending is very strange and unknown to us as viewers of the picture, which makes us so much more effected, you will know what I mean!

The dog, Uggie, steals the show! It’s cute, clever and I wish they had an animal exception in the Oscar nominations for best actor! He laid down on command, performed tricks and just was fantastic and original to watch!

This film is certainly one of the best to come out this year, it demonstrates style amazing plot, actors and the want was made was original and excellent.

Most defiantly check this film out! Watch the Oscars and keep following my blog.

Thanks,

Claire.

All these offers it is hard to keep up but yes Orange have really catered for us film lovers. In the heat of all this suspense it is worth mentioning I am hoping The Artist steals the show. Another one of my favourites is Iron Lady, but many disagree and are against the film, Meryl Streep's performance was amazing and the film was enthralling, what are your thoughts? Agree? ;

Other nominations such as The Descendents for myself is debatable and I am shocked Hugo is not in best picture or other films. However, there is a good all rounded film selection. Get talking, who is going to win? Excited? Any parties? ;

The Descendants

20120202-133106.jpg

I expected lots from this motion picture, after it’s recent Oscar nomination for best picture. Nevertheless, I was failed to be impressed by what I thought was an extremely character driven film with not much happening.

The basic plot was a middle aged guy – Matt (George Clooney) – was forced to care for his two children, whom he has barley seen on his busy business ventures, due to his wife’s unfortunate accident that resulted in a coma.

The films positives is that it takes the spin on the stereotypical outlook of the female caring for the kids. It shows, usual slick Clooney, in his middle aged worn down and average plain Joe clothes. He learns the whole new world of motherhood which was brilliantly covered. Nevertheless, I felt the film was weak in its film narrative.

The fact we learn of the wife’s fate at the start of the film and also realise how her unfaithful nature brings a lot of atmosphere between the family is its extreme downfall. I didn’t feel like I was watching a plot unfold and be surprised instead I knew where the story was going.

However, excellent acting by Clooney, who is also up for a best actor Oscar nomination. Shailene Woodley and Amara Miller were both excellent actors as his two daughters Alexandre and Scottie bringing the occasional humorous moment.

This film was debatable regarding its nomination, personally I came out thinking it was an average film. Iron Lady on the other hand made me think, encapsulated my mind and thoughts and was really entertaining. I believe that should be up for an Oscar, however, due to its protests and likely conflict I think this is the reason behind the decision.

I have shared thoughts via this film, however, others may disagree. Go check it out for yourself.

Thanks,

The Iron Lady

Controversy, protests and a lot of fuming people, The Iron Lady certainly has been the talking point of this years film showings. Curious to find out why Meryl Streep stole the Golden Globe awards and nominated for Oscars and the claims the film glorifies the ex prime minister I had to watch this film for myself.

The plot is enthralling, encapsulating and moving. The main focus of the film is in regards to her dementia, the way this is shown is accurate, emotional and really hits the spot. I see this film more than just a biography of her eventful reign as Prime Minister, it illustrates this condition in such a gripping fashion that I found myself crying several times. The style of the film is independent, gritty and true English. It has shallow depth of field in many shots with intense detail, the style of this film just added to the storyline. Meryl Streep deserves her awards, comical, humorous and excellent accuracy in speech, appearance, the make-up department really did great, which two are up for awards for hair.

There have been many individuals stating their disapproval regarding the creation of this film. I have to disagree, I believe Margret Thatcher was terrible in choices she made, I’ve bought a book to find more out to make an accurate decision, but this film was not glorifying her time as the leader. The film demonstrates her bullying nature, strict, ruthless and determined in regards to her beliefs. Real imagery of riots, her condescending talk to her cabinet and how she was so engrossed in her work she forgot about her family. How do these aspects represent glory?

I agree she was not a feminist but she is the first and only female prime minister, pretty good to note.

The storyline flips between the present and past. Interchanging her dementia and illusions of her husband who passed away of cancer. The demonstration of her life is so lonely, conviction of cinematographer is fantastic. On subject of the creation of the film I loved the editing, sharp, fast, jump cuts works with Streep’s on the ball comical nature. The tyrant of the 80′s is seen vulnerable and frail, unsure of life and desperate for answers, this is hard hitting and sad which really got to me.

Despite the critics I really enjoyed this film, I’m intrigued to read more about her and follow the filmmakers who made this screenplay.

Go check it out. You can’t comment and be against this if you have not seen it.

Thanks,

Claire.

For this assignment I have to design a greetings card to send to my tutor that would show a bit about what I like, what I am interested in, what inspires me and what materials I like using. I decided to draw up a wordstorm. I tried to think of all the things associated with me such as my favorite films, favorite artists, my hobbies, things that are important to me. I then did another one to concentrate on aspects of my personality. I’m not sure how I am going to incorporate these ideas from the wordstorms …

This is some amazing art work that others should be aware of!

Hangover Part II

Directed by Todd Phillips, Hangover Part II features previous cast Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis and Ed Helms. It provides laughter, is hilariously ridiculous and an absolute genius of a film.

Two years after the erratic bachelor party in Las Vegas, Phil (Cooper), Alan (Galifianakis) and Doug (Justin Bartha) jet to Thailand for Stu’s (Helms) wedding, yes marriage on the cards again, least this time its sober!

Stu is determined to avoid humiliation and have a sensible bachelor party in order to marry his love. However, these boys never make it simple nor boring when they come to celebrate the end of ones singleton life!

Hangover Part II consists of stolen monkeys, missing fingers, missing people, shaven heads, permanent tattoos, unaware gay sex and a run in with the cops! Absolutely fantastic! Certainly beats the prequel, Hangover.

In this dreaded run of events, Stu must find his future wife’s younger brother who is missing before he has chance to return to wed his fiance. As always things are not as simple as they seem and returning to places which explain their path, while under the influence of illegal substances, is challenging and in some cases dangerous.

It follows the same format as Hangover, starting at the middle of the film, filling in the blanks and we have a cheeky look at the dreading wolf pack photos. This certainly is an advantage to the film as viewers who adored Hangover, it added more comedy and action to the events that unfolded.

Galifianakis was incredible, funny to the point where you laugh out load in the cinema. He makes Hangover Part II successful with his snobby charm and explicit dumness.

Go check out Hangover Part II, if you like your comedy you shall not be disappointed.

Released in cinemas 26th of May.
