Directed by Michel Hazanavicius. With Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo, John Goodman, James Cromwell. This silent film certainly impresses and shows why it has earned the Best Picture nomination.
I was encapsulated throughout this film, it focuses on a silent film actor George Valentine, who’s extremely popular for his act and very wealthy. We are taken on a journey leading to the downfall of this stars career.
I find it amazing that we are able to follow this feature, modern day film throughout without sound. It certainly brings note to how essential sound is in feature films but also how good acting and narrative really does make a film. The acting was incredible, the strong emotions and powerful suggestions empower the audience to determine the storyline.
I loved how the plot of the film linked with the actual creation of the film. The fall of the silent film actor and the rise of the speaking actress demonstrate how our current day market rely heavily on sound. However, The Artist has done incredible in box office sales and award nominations, is it the start of a new era of these type of films? Are we going to relive the 1930′s? Or would people find that too hard to get their head around? Lack of sound and dialogue, many of these common day actors would not last if we were to go back to past acting and films.
The sound gives occasional surprises and treats which really adds to the original style of this format of the film. The ending is very strange and unknown to us as viewers of the picture, which makes us so much more effected, you will know what I mean!
The dog, Uggie, steals the show! It’s cute, clever and I wish they had an animal exception in the Oscar nominations for best actor! He laid down on command, performed tricks and just was fantastic and original to watch!
This film is certainly one of the best to come out this year, it demonstrates style amazing plot, actors and the want was made was original and excellent.
Most defiantly check this film out! Watch the Oscars and keep following my blog.
Thanks,
Claire.
